San Marcos, California — March 4, 2011
Police say a crash in San Marcos, northeast of California State Route 78, left a motorcyclist with major injuries and landed a pickup driver in police custody.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reports that the motorcyclist was riding eastbound on Montiel Road, near the intersection of Nordahl Road, shortly after 7:15 p.m. Another vehicle reportedly cut him off, forcing the motorcyclist to swerve into the middle of the intersection, where he was struck by a pickup truck as it attempted to make a left turn from Montiel Road onto Nordahl Road.
Investigators say Richard William Flaig, 61, the pickup driver, ran over the rider and his motorcycle. He fled the scene, but was later apprehended and is being held on $50,000 bail at the Vista Detention Facility on Melrose.
The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The nature and severity of his injuries has not been released.
