Newman, California — February 1, 2011

Police say an elderly Newman man was killed Tuesday in a head-on collision along Hills Ferry Road.

The California Highway Patrol reports that 75-year-old Cesar Paiz was traveling west on Hills Ferry Road, east of California State Route 33,  in a 1994 Toyota pickup truck, shortly before noon on Tuesday, when he attempted to pass a vehicle traveling ahead of him. Investigators say Mr. Paiz pulled into the lane of oncoming traffic where he struck a 2003 Toyota Rav4 sport-utility vehicle, driven by 36-year-old Patricia Carrillo, as it traveled east.

It is unclear whether Mr. Paiz died at the scene of the crash or was taken to a nearby hospital.

Police say the crash inflicted Ms. Carrillo with severe injuries. Two more occupants of the SUV, 6-year-old Nicole Caina and 8-year-old Kristin Caina, escaped with only minor injuries.

Investigators do not consider drugs or alcohol a factor in the crash.
