Burbank, California — January 30, 2011

Police say a series of crashes along a wet stretch of U.S. Route 101 near Universal City claimed the life of an elderly man on Sunday.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the female driver of a 2003 Dodge pickup truck, 45, entered U.S. Route 101 (Hollywood Freeway/California State Route 170) near the Cahuenga Pass and struck a Honda Civic, driven by a woman from Camarillo. The Civic’s driver, 77, was seriously injured.

Her passenger, Sylvester Ray Martinez, 78, suffered major injuries and a heart attack. He was transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, but doctors were unable to save him. The pickup’s driver sustained reportedly minor injuries.

Investigators report that five vehicles were involved in three subsequent crashes.

Police shut down the roadway for an hour to conduct an investigation and clear debris.
