San Bernardino, California — January 22, 2011
Police say a Nuevo motorcyclist was killed near San Bernardino on Saturday afternoon when he was struck by a fugitive on the run from police traveling the wrong way on Interstate 215.
The San Bernardino Police Department reports that a man observed the suspect stealing his white Ford F-150 pickup truck around noon. While giving chase, he called 911 to report the theft. Officers responded and initiated a traffic stop, at which time the suspect entered the northbound I-215 heading south and collided head-on with the motorcycle.
Mark Offeney, 57, of Nuevo, suffered fatal injuries in the crash. His identity was not immediately, but was later determined by the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office.
The suspect then fled the scene. He is described as a Hispanic male, roughly 5 feet, 6 inches tall. He was last seenwearing blue jeans a light-colored T-shirt or brown hooded sweatshirt.
