Spring Valley, California — December 2, 2010
Police say an elderly driver sent three high school students to the hospital when he swerved onto a sidewalk as they walked home from school in Spring Valley.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the three students at Mount Miguel High School were walking against traffic along Sweetwater Road around 2:50 p.m. Thursday when they were struck by a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, driven by 72-year-old Lemon Grove resident John Reyes.
Mr. Reyes’ pickup first struck a utility pole, breaking it in half, then plowed into the group of three, two boys and a girl. All three victims were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries described as moderate to major, but not considered life-threatening.
Mr. Reyes also complained of pain and was hospitalized.
Investigators found no immediate signs of drugs or alcohol, but say the crash remains under investigation.
