Smith River, California — December 2, 2010

Police say a man from Smith River, 47, was killed Thursday when he and a passenger were ejected from a vehicle near the Oregon border.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the man and a passenger, identified as 32-year-old Ira S. Norris, were headed northbound on Low Divide Road in a 1994 Toyota pickup truck at the time of the crash. Around 1 p.m., the driver failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the roadway, causing the vehicle to roll down a steep embankment and ejecting both occupants.

Ms. Norris was airlifted by a Coast Guard helicopter stationed at Humboldt Bay to St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka for treatment of major injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
