Police say fisherman Glenn Shoji Iwamoto, 71, died Tuesday morning when the crab boat he was on capsized off the Sonoma County coast.
The U.S. Coast Guard and the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department reports that the five-man crew was fishing near the mouth of the Russian River when a line became tangled in the boat’s propeller. While the crew struggled to free the line, a series of waves crashed over the side of the boat, causing it to overturn.
Another crab boat came to the aid of the imperiled crew, pulling the five victims on board and transferring them to a Coast Guard vessel that arrived at the scene around 9:45 a.m. None of the capsized fisherman was wearing life jackets.
Paramedics performed CPR on Mr. Iwamoto, but he was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene. The four other victims received treatment for hypothermia.
