Julian, California — November 16, 2010

Police say a military pilot died Sunday in a motorcycle crash near Julian that left another motorcyclist with critical injuries.

Major Lawrence A. Washington, 39, of Santa Barbara, was riding west on Wynola Road, west of Farmers Road, shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday when he struck another motorcyclist head-on while attempting to pass. Both riders were thrown to the ground.

Paramedics arrived to find Major Washington without a pulse and not breathing. Both men were airlifted to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido. Major Washington died at the hospital around 4:25 p.m. while the second, unidentified victim remains in critical condition.

Major Washington was stationed at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station where he was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing as an MV-22 Osprey pilot. During his service, he earned an Air Medal with five strike-flight designations, two commendation medals from the Navy and Marine Corps and an achievement medal from the Marine Corps.
