Police say a 4-year-old boy was one of two people who died Friday when a semi rear-ended a car on Route 156 near San Martin, thrusting it into the path of oncoming traffic.
The Monterey County Coroner’s Office reports that 4-year-old Gilroy resident Alex Navarro and 48-year-old Castroville resident Maria Almanza-Romero were killed in the crash, which occurred around 2:30 p.m.
The California Highway Patrol reports that Ms. Almanza-Romero was driving west in a 1992 Honda Accord when she stopped on Route 152 in order to make a left turn. Meanwhile, a semi driven by 52-year-old Hollister resident Ronn Williams failed to stop while heading west near Meridian Road, striking the Accord and sending it into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lane.
The Accord and semi struck a 2003 Chrysler Sebring operated by Cassandra Jones, 29, of Gilroy, and carrying 4-year-old Alex.
Ms. Jones suffered unidentified injuries and was transported to Navidad Medical Center. Mr. Williams, the trucker, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation, but police do not believe alcohol was a factor.
