Los Angeles, California — October 26, 2010
Police say a black BMW ran a red light Monday in Boyle Heights, killing a pedestrian and striking a school bus, before the three occupants fled on foot.
The California Highway Patrol reports that a construction worker was able to corral two of the occupants: the driver, 17, and a passenger, 14. The third occupant was arrested after seeking medical attention from a hospital.
Police said 18 of the 46 Roosevelt High School students and driver on board the bus were hospitalized for treatment of minor injuries.
Police have recommended charges of felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter against the driver, and charges of conspiracy against the two passengers. It remains unclear whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
The bus was reportedly headed back to Roosevelt High School from the East Los Angeles Skills Center around 3:20 p.m. when the crash occurred at the intersection of First Street and Soto Avenue. Investigators say a second bus was involved in the crash, but exactly how remains unclear.
