Santa Ana, California — October 20, 2010

Police say Eric Christopher Woodward,39, suffered a grand mal seizure while driving in Santa Ana on Wednesday, causing him to strike a mother and her 4-year-old child.

The Santa Ana Police Department reports that Mr. Woodward and his mother were traveling east in a Ford Crown Victoria along East McFadden Avenue, near Grand Avenue, around 10 a.m. when the vehicle drifted onto the sidewalk, striking the woman and crushing the stroller containing her young son. The vehicle finally came to rest against an iron fence.

The force of the collision threw the victims 20 feet. The mother suffered a broken shoulder and landed face-down in mud, while her son was in critical condition with trauma to the head. Both were transported to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana.

Mr. Woodward’s mother, 65, told police she took the steering wheel when it appeared her son was having a seizure. Because of his medical condition, Mr. Woodward does not have a driver’s license.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office will determine whether to file charges in the case.
