Westminster, California — September 22, 2010
A pickup truck rolled into a flood-control channel in Westminster on Wednesday, killing a high-school student and leaving two other students injured.
Police say 18-year-old Kody Kessler, a student at Ocean View High School, was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr. Kessler was seated in the front-passenger seat, the point of greatest impact in the crash.
The Westminster Police Department reports that the Chevrolet pickup was heading south on Rancho Avenue when the driver lost control near Spa Drive, veering off the roadway, crashing through a chain-link fence and rolling into the concrete channel.
Another Ocean View student, 18-year-old Kristopher Howell, was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver, 18-year-old Marina High School student Jared Von Grote, was treated for similar injuries.
The accident remains under investigation. Police say all three occupants were wearing seatbelts.
