Palm Desert, California — September 16, 2010

Police say a Palm Desert man on probation for drunken driving was driving under the influence Wednesday night when he crashed on Highway 74, injuring himself and his passenger.

The California Highway Patrol reports that 22-year-old Gustavo Islas Duran has been arrested on suspicion of driving without a license, driving under the influence causing injury and driving with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.08.

The accident happened around 11:38 p.m. between Vista Drive and Palowet Drive when a 1998 Honda Civic driven by Mr. Duran lost control around a curve and overturned. The passenger, 19, sustained major injuries and was transported to Desert Regional medical Center in Palm Springs.

Court records indicate Mr. Duran pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence in January, and received three years’ probation.

Police shut down traffic on Highway 74 for a short time to clear debris and investigate the accident.
