San Mateo, California — September 12, 2010

Two people died after a motorist traveling in the wrong direction triggered an accident involving multiple vehichles on Highway 101 early Sunday morning.

The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office has identified the victims as 26-year-old Steven Pereira of Titusvilla, Florida and 39-year-old Stacy White of San Mateo.

A red Saturn driven by Ms. White entered southbound 101 near Hillsdale Boulevard traveling north around 2:50 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Sgt. Trent Cross said Ms. White stopped near the East Poplar Avenue exit and got out of the vehicle.

After Mr. Pereira stopped to help her, a black limousine traveling at approximately 65 mph hit both individuals, sending them into the northbound lanes. Both victims were struck by oncoming traffic and pronounced dead at the scene.

A strong odor of alcohol from her car and body suggest Ms. White was driving under the influence at the time of the crash, Cross reported.

The police investigation reduced traffic to one northbound lane and one southbound lane for more than 14 hours.
