Calabasas, California — August 26, 2010
A nun was killed and a pastor injured Thursday when a car driven by the U.S. ambassador to Malta crashed into a drainage ditch.
The California Highway Patrol said 58-year-old Ambassador Douglas Kmiec was behind the wheel of a Hyundai Accent traveling on Mulholland Drive when the car veered into a drainage ditch. His passengers were 74-year-old Sister Mary Campbell of Our Lady of Malibu Catholic Church and 94-year-old Pastor Emeritus Monsignor John Sheridan.
California Highway Patrol Officer Leland Tang said Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene, while Sheridan suffered moderate injuries. Kmiec, a professor of law at Pepperdine University, also sustained moderate injuries.
The car was returning to Our Lady of Malibu after the three occupants participated in an anniversary celebration at a Woodland Hills high school.
Sheridan underwent surgery, according to a church spokeswoman, and was listed in critical but stable condition. Kmiec also reportedly underwent surgery.
President Barack Obama nominated Kmiec as ambassador to Malta and, in September 2009, the candidate was sworn in.
