Celestia Duffin, 32, and her unborn child were killed in an accident on Tuesday in which Ms. Duffin had been stabbed in the chest. Ms. Duffin’s husband, James Herring, 34, was found in an accident near the Fort Smith Police Department station when Ms. Duffin ran to the station.

Mr. Herring was arrested on charges of first-degree murder. Officials believe Ms. Duffin was driving when Mr. Herring stabbed her, causing the car to crash into a utility pole. No one else was in the car at hte time of the accident.

Ms. Duffin delivered her son, but both mother and child died shortly after.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 1.13 fatalities occurred for every 100 million miles of travel in 2009. The rate in 1966 was 5.5 deaths per 100 million miles.
