Police say a traveler died and four others were injured Friday when two vehicles collided in the Mesa area.
According to the Mesa Fire Department, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled near the corner of Broadway Road and Alma School Road. Around 1:25 p.m., the driver was involved in a collision with another vehicle.
The impact left five occupants pinned in the wreckage. Paramedics responded to the scene, but were unable to save one traveler.
Four others were hospitalized for treatment of undisclosed injuries.
According to statistics from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, 823 travelers died in traffic accidents in 2012, compared to 827 in 2011.
UPDATE: The deceased victim has been identified as Jared Carter, 35. One of the drivers involved in the crash, 27-year-old Matthew Crisp, has been arrested on suspicion of assault and manslaughter.
